Chapter Six

Christina was now officially an RCA recording artist. There was a major thrill in simply saying it and hearing the words. But no one was about to rush an album out to capitalize on her appearance on the Mulan soundtrack. There was no hurry. The label was going to do it right, and that meant taking their time, working with Christina to select the right songs. They were going to make sure she got the debut she deserved.

All that was going to take time, and a lot of effort, particularly during what was called the preproduction phase. But once Christina became fully involved, it was going to demand a lot from her. And that meant something would have to give. Shelly sat down with Christina’s manager and people from the label, and it was agreed that Christina would finish her junior year at school, and then be tutored for her senior year. At first Shelly wasn’t sure; she’d always insisted that school had to come first. But the label promised extensive tutoring—she wouldn’t miss out on a thing, and might even end up with a better education. Christina had a chance to realize the dream that had been with her for almost ten years; who was she to stand in the way of that? More than that, she wanted her daughter—all her children—to succeed.

Nothing, however, would happen until the summer, and even then Christina would be concentrating on helping to promote Mulan by making some personal appearances. So she still had a few months of “real” school to endure. Although she was eager to move on, now things were happening so fast, it wasn’t too bad. She had her friends, and an extra incentive to do well—the more she did this year, the easier home schooling would be for her senior year.

Her family was so proud of her. She’d achieved a great deal, she’d already done things very few people got to do, and she’d barely even scratched the surface of a career yet. And no longer was she just hoping for things to push ahead. She already knew they were; she could simply relax for right now, and concentrate on enjoying herself before the real work began.

To be able to chill a bit like that was peaceful. The only pressure was schoolwork, and she found herself eager to work at that, to get the best grades she could, and prove that she really was a good student—to end her career in high school on a high note.

One thing that didn’t worry her was the idea that she might be plunging into all this too young, as a few people thought. While the entertainment industry could chew people up and spit them out, Christina knew she had enough experience to handle herself well.

“I’d be worried about being messed up if I didn’t do this,” she told a reporter. And it was true. Her life was opening up ahead of her, and it would all begin in June, with the premiere of Mulan and the end of school.
